Questions for Thought - Ten Tips for Successful Technology Integration

Tip 1 - Know the Technology TEKS for Your Students

Browse the TEKS for Technology Applications for your grade level and become familiar with them. List several skills that students in your class should be able to demonstrate if they are to master these TEKS. List several activities that you do/could do in your class that could help students become more proficient in this skill.

Tip 2 - Know and Follow SBEC's Technology Applications Standards for Teachers

Browse the SBEC standards for teachers. Find and list several skills that you feel confident you can do with mastery. Find and list several skills that you do not know how to do.

Tip 3 - Become More Comfortable with Technology by Using it in Your Life and Work

List several ways in which you are using technology in your life. List several ways you are already using technology in your job as a teacher (administrative duties) and in your instruction.

Tip 4 - Begin Integration at a Pace That is Comfortable for You

List several technology-based lesson ideas that you have used with your students. List several ideas that you have considered doing but have not done.

Tip 5 - Borrow the Good Ideas of Others

Find at least five sources on the Internet that offer help with integrating technology. Create a brief summary of each one and write down the address of each.

Tip 6 - Get Help Before You Get Frustrated

Describe a situation in which the use of technology has frustrated you or someone you know. Make a least of at least five barriers to your use of technology on a regular basis in your instruction.

Tip 7 - Enlist the Help of Your Students

Make a list of technology-related jobs in your classroom with which your students could help out. What things would you not allow students to help with?

Tip 8 - Utilize More Student-Centered Methods of Instruction

Think about a given week of instruction (If you can take a look at a lesson plan, this would be helpful). Categorize each of your activities as either a student-centered activity (S) or a teacher-centered activity (T). Which type is more prevalent in your classroom? List several ways in which you could convert some of the teacher-centered activities into student-centered activities.

Tip 9 - Assist Others by Sharing Your Knowledge of Technology

Use the Internet to look for potential listserves or blogs concerning the use of technology in education. Make a list of at least five of the examples you find.

Tip 10 - To Conquer Your Fear of Technology, Just Do It

Make a list of five things that frighten you about the use of technology in your classroom. Take a look at at least one of the following articles:
